Looking for a New or Replacement Mortice Door Lock?

Mortice Lock Information

Mortice Deadlock Deadlock Mortice Sashlock Sashlock

The two main types of mortice locks are the Deadlock and the Sashlock. The deadlock has a single bolt operated by a key. The sashlock has a bolt operated by key but also a sprung latch that can be operated by handles. Both types of lock are morticed into the edge of the door - that is cut into the edge of the door rather than screwed to the face of the door. Locks that screw to the face of the door are referred to as Rim locks .

These days some insurance companies insist on a five lever deadlock or sashlock to British Standard BS3621 :1980 or BS3621 :2004. The latest 2004 specification has been improved and includes a 20mm long bolt . Both standards include the requirement for 5 levers and 1000 key variations, anti drill hardened plates on both sides of the lock and other features to protect the lock from attack. There are many mortice locks that are not to British Standard on our website and for many applications such as internal doors you may not need them to be certified. If you have any doubts please consult your insurance company as  their advice does differ.

You may be looking to replace an exsisting deadlock or sashlock in your door and if this is the case you will need to understand how to measure the lock you have and compare it with the dimension details on our site  All our mortice locks have a link that supplies the size of the lock as above. If you are fitting a new lock to a door the size is still important.

Things to consider are the case depth (A) this is usually 64mm ( 2.5") or 76mm (3"). This is important if you are fitting a new lock as sometimes  the lock will be fitted into a glazed door and the door frame may be narrow and not accept a 76mm lock. Another consideration is the backset (B) . In some cases a 3" lock may be needed so that the key hole (and handles if it is a sashlock) are further from the edge of the door to avoid being to close to the door frame. Dimension (C) the case height will need to be considered if you are replacing an exsiting door lock but if you are fitting a new lock this should not be a problem.

On a sashlock dimension (D) the centre distance between the key hole and the handles is usually 56 to 57mm (2 1/4"). Lever Handles can be supplied for sashlocks and these are normally supplied with the same centre distance.

If you are fitting a replacement deadlock or sash lock to your door you will need to look carefully at dimension (D) and (E) the forend length and width. The forend is recessed into the edge of the door and you will need to find a match if reworking of the door or filling are to be avoided. In some cases older mortice locks have been discontinued and an exact match is not possible.
