Looking for a New or Replacement Padlock

How padlocks are measured.

The padlock size is determined by the width of the body (A). If you take a rule and measure the body width of the padlock this will give you the size. Padlocks usually come in 20,30,40,50,60 and 70mm sizes, but there are some sizes such as 35 and 45mm. Some padlocks such as Federal come in sizes like 64mm which is a 2 1/2".

Once you have decided on the body size you need to consider the padlock shackle diameter (E) and shackle clearance (C and D).The shackle is the metal loop that locks into the padlock body. This is usually made from hardened steel to resist sawing and cropping. It is also chrome plated to resist corrosion. However to be completly sure of corrosion protection the shackle can be supplied in stainless steel. If the shackle is made of stainless steel this reduces the padlocks security rating as stainless steel cannot be hardened to the same degree as carbon steel.

The shackle clearance (the space inside the steel loop) is usually two measurments - the Vertical (D) and Horizontal (C). The vertical clearance is the distance between the top of the padlock body and the inner radius of the shackle. The horizontal clearance is the internal measurement between the two shackle diameters where they come out of the body. On closed shackle padlocks (this is where the padlock body is extended to further protect the padlock from attack) this dimension may be reduced.

The padlock shackle diameter needs to be carefully considered as as you need to make sure that it passes through the hole in the item being secured. The padlock shackle diameter is usually determined by the size of the padlock, the bigger the padlock the bigger the diameter of the shackle. The bigger the padlock the higher the security rating in most cases.

Padlocks can be supplied KEYED ALIKE or KEYED TO DIFFER.

What does it mean?

KEYED ALIKE - This option is used if you want more than one Padlock to operate with the same key. Locks by different manufacturers cannot be keyed alike.

KEYED TO DIFFER - This option is used if you want all the padlocks to have different keys. If you only order one lock then it would be keyed to differ by default.

Some Padlocks can also be MASTERKEYED This is where you can have  50 padlocks all with different keys but there is one key that fits all the 50. For example a group of storage boxes where people need their own individual keys but the manager has one key that can open all.
