The ERA replacement rim cylinder is a core security component designed to provide keyed access for doors fitted with surface-mounted night latches. As a 5-pin mechanism, it offers a reliable level of security for residential and light commercial applications. The cylinder functions by transferring the rotational movement of the key through a flat metal tailpiece into the internal lock case, allowing the latch bolt to be retracted from the outside.
Typically used during maintenance or security upgrades, this component is the ideal choice when original keys have been compromised or when a property changes hands. It allows for a complete change of locking combination without the cost or labour involved in replacing the internal latch assembly. The unit is designed to fit through a standard 32mm hole, making it a universal fit for most traditional rim lock installations on timber doors.
When installing, it is essential to ensure the tailpiece is correctly aligned with the internal latch mechanism to prevent friction or binding during operation. Periodic lubrication with a graphite-based lubricant is recommended to maintain smooth key entry and rotation.
The ERA 863-51 is a standard replacement rim cylinder designed to be compatible with most front door nightlatches. It fits standard ERA locks as well as most other brands that utilize a traditional rim cylinder mechanism.
This cylinder is supplied with 2 keys. If you need additional sets, the keys can be easily duplicated by most local locksmiths or hardware stores using standard key blanks.
Yes, the cylinder comes with a long metal tailpiece that can be cut or snapped to the required length. This allows it to fit a wide range of door thicknesses by ensuring the bar correctly reaches the internal lock body.
Installation is straightforward for most DIY users. It typically involves removing the internal nightlatch, unscrewing the old cylinder, and inserting the new ERA cylinder into the existing hole. Some minor adjustment to the tailpiece length may be required during fitting.
