4/10 Security Rating

The Yale 706 Traditional Nightlatch is a surface-mounted rim lock designed for use on standard timber doors. It provides secondary security and convenient operation, commonly used on residential entrance doors in conjunction with a separate mortice deadlock.

Functionally, the latchbolt is withdrawn from the outside using a key and from the inside using a simple turn knob. The unit features an integrated slide button, or "snib", which allows the bolt to be either held back (preventing the door from locking) or deadlocked from the inside for increased security while the building is occupied.

  • Versatile Installation: The latchbolt is fully reversible on-site, making it suitable for both left and right-handed inward opening doors.
  • Compatibility: Designed for doors with a thickness between 32mm and 57mm.
  • Standard Security: Supplied with a 5-pin rim cylinder as standard.

For outward opening doors, this nightlatch can be fitted using a separate reverse strike plate. It is an ideal replacement part for existing traditional Yale nightlatches or for new installations where a classic rim lock configuration is required.

FAQs

No unfortunately not, the BS3621 nightlatches can not be reversed. The only way to do this is to install a standard nightlatch from our outward opening nightlatch section and then also install a BS3621 deadlock. This deadlock will give you the insurance rating required.

You need to make sure the lock you fit is NON deadlocking. This means that you can not lock people into the property. There are a few nightlatches designed for these doors. The best is the Yale PBS3 or PBS4 or a more standard model would be the Yale 88 or 84.

The best locks for these would be the a rollerbolt style lock with a masterkeyed cylinder. I would not recommend installing a standard Nightlatch on these doors as the tenants can lock themselves out if they close the door behind them. We can supply these locks for you on a masterkey if you require or keyed differ if you would prefer.

The backset on these locks is the distance from the edge of the door to the center of the Rim Cylinder. This is the large 32mm hole drilled through the door. There are 2 main sizes of these, 60mm or 40mm. Easiest way to find out what you have is to measure from outside of the door from the edge to the center of the keyhole. If you have a solid door you should use the 60mm backset locks, if you have a glass panelled door then you may need to use the 40mm backset. If your current lock is 50mm backset you will need to see our Union locks as only Union made a 50mm backset lock in the past.

There are different levels of security you can have with all locks. The standard locks (i.e. Yale 77, Yale 88) , then the mid level locks which can be key deadlocked from outside ( Yale 89, Union nightlatches). The double locking versions are only suitable for homes with other means of exit as you can lock people inside the house if not careful.

All the extra keys for the locks are cut to the specific locks that have been ordered.

With most locks that are altered to make them keyed alike you will only get 1 x set of keys with them. So if the locks normally come with 2 you will only get 2 keys total and if they come with 3 keys you will only get 3 x keys total when ordered keyed alike.

The Yale 706 includes an internal slide button that provides two functions: it can deadlock the bolt for added security or hold the latch back in the open position. Note that deadlocking is operated via the internal button only; for a model that deadlocks by key from the outside, look at the Yale 723.

Yes, the latchbolt is designed to be easily reversible on site. Additionally, reverse strikes are available to ensure the lock works correctly with outward opening door configurations.

This lock is suitable for timber doors with a thickness ranging from 32mm to 57mm. The 5-pin cylinder and connecting bar are designed to accommodate these standard door sizes.

Each Yale 706 nightlatch comes with the following components:

  • The main lock case in an Enamelled Nickel Bronze finish
  • A 5-pin rim cylinder (available in Brass or Satin Chrome)
  • Two keys

The Yale Rim Lock Extra Key is a precision-machined mechanical key designed specifically for use with standard Yale rim cylinders. These cylinders are the primary locking component found in traditional nightlatches used on timber entrance doors. Cutting extra keys to the correct profile is essential for property management, shared occupancy, or simply ensuring a spare is available in case of an emergency.

Each key is manufactured to match the specific internal pin configuration of the cylinder it is intended for. This ensures reliable engagement of the locking bolt and reduces friction during rotation, which helps to extend the lifespan of the lock's internal mechanism. These keys are intended for use as duplicates or replacements when the original set is insufficient or has been lost.

  • Application: Primarily used for front door nightlatches and secondary rim locking systems.
  • Compatibility: Designed for use with all standard Yale-branded rim cylinders.
  • Function: Operates the cylinder from the external side of the door to retract the latch or engage the deadbolt.

When providing additional keys for a security system, using precision-cut blanks is vital to maintain the security integrity of the door. These keys provide a functional and cost-effective alternative to replacing the entire cylinder unit when additional access points are required for a property.

This Black & Decker Drill Bit Set is specifically curated for the installation of nightlatches on wooden doors. It provides the essential boring tools required to prepare a door for standard cylinder rim locks, ensuring a clean and accurate fit.

The kit comprises a flat spade bit and a smaller twist drill bit. The spade bit is used to create the large diameter hole necessary for the lock cylinder to pass through the door leaf. Its central point allows for precise alignment with marked measurements, while the outer spurs cut the wood fibres cleanly to prevent breakout on the reverse side of the door.

The accompanying twist drill is used for drilling pilot holes for the mounting screws and the internal cylinder tailpiece. This prevents the timber from splitting during the final assembly of the lock hardware. Both components are manufactured from hardened steel to maintain sharpness across multiple installations in various timber densities.

  • Compatible with standard power drills and impact drivers
  • Suitable for new door installations and replacement upgrades
  • Ideal for use with most standard UK rim cylinder nightlatches
