The Yale 85 Reversed Deadlocking Nightlatch is a specialised security solution engineered specifically for outward-opening timber doors. Unlike standard nightlatches, this model features a reversed bolt configuration to ensure secure engagement with the frame when the door swings away from the building. It is an essential component for installations where a standard inward-opening latch cannot function.

The unit features a compact body design, making it highly effective for doors with narrow panels or restricted mounting space. The internal lever handle provides easy egress, while the deadlocking feature allows the internal handle to be disabled via the external cylinder, providing higher security when the property is vacant.

Functionality is enhanced by a slide snib located on the lock body. This button can be used to either hold the bolt in the retracted position for convenient access or to deadlock the bolt in the closed position for added privacy and security. While robust, this nightlatch is typically used as a secondary lock and is best paired with a British Standard BS3621 mortice deadlock on external entrance doors to meet insurance requirements.

  • Designed for outward-opening door applications
  • Deadlocking bolt prevents unauthorised handle operation
  • Snib function for hold-back and internal deadlocking
  • Suitable for both internal and external timber doors

Please note that due to the reversed application, a specific outward-opening strike plate is required for a complete installation as standard strike plates will not align.

FAQs

No unfortunately not, the BS3621 nightlatches can not be reversed. The only way to do this is to install a standard nightlatch from our outward opening nightlatch section and then also install a BS3621 deadlock. This deadlock will give you the insurance rating required.

You need to make sure the lock you fit is NON deadlocking. This means that you can not lock people into the property. There are a few nightlatches designed for these doors. The best is the Yale PBS3 or PBS4 or a more standard model would be the Yale 88 or 84.

The best locks for these would be the a rollerbolt style lock with a masterkeyed cylinder. I would not recommend installing a standard Nightlatch on these doors as the tenants can lock themselves out if they close the door behind them. We can supply these locks for you on a masterkey if you require or keyed differ if you would prefer.

The backset on these locks is the distance from the edge of the door to the center of the Rim Cylinder. This is the large 32mm hole drilled through the door. There are 2 main sizes of these, 60mm or 40mm. Easiest way to find out what you have is to measure from outside of the door from the edge to the center of the keyhole. If you have a solid door you should use the 60mm backset locks, if you have a glass panelled door then you may need to use the 40mm backset. If your current lock is 50mm backset you will need to see our Union locks as only Union made a 50mm backset lock in the past.

There are different levels of security you can have with all locks. The standard locks (i.e. Yale 77, Yale 88) , then the mid level locks which can be key deadlocked from outside ( Yale 89, Union nightlatches). The double locking versions are only suitable for homes with other means of exit as you can lock people inside the house if not careful.

All the extra keys for the locks are cut to the specific locks that have been ordered.

With most locks that are altered to make them keyed alike you will only get 1 x set of keys with them. So if the locks normally come with 2 you will only get 2 keys total and if they come with 3 keys you will only get 3 x keys total when ordered keyed alike.

A reversed nightlatch is designed specifically for outward-opening doors. Unlike standard models, this configuration allows the latch to function correctly on doors that swing away from the frame rather than into it.

This lock offers enhanced security through two deadlocking methods. You can use the slide button to deadlock the bolt or hold it back. Additionally, the internal handle can be deadlocked by a reverse turn of the key from the outside cylinder after the door is closed.

The standard strike plate typically provided with nightlatches is not compatible with outward-opening, reversed configurations. Because this lock requires a specific outward-opening strike plate for a secure fit, the standard version is omitted to avoid installation errors.

Yes, this 40mm version features a shorter body designed for doors where space is limited. It is specifically intended for narrow door stiles or panels where a standard-width nightlatch might not fit due to width constraints.

The Yale Rim Lock Extra Key is a precision-machined mechanical key designed specifically for use with standard Yale rim cylinders. These cylinders are the primary locking component found in traditional nightlatches used on timber entrance doors. Cutting extra keys to the correct profile is essential for property management, shared occupancy, or simply ensuring a spare is available in case of an emergency.

Each key is manufactured to match the specific internal pin configuration of the cylinder it is intended for. This ensures reliable engagement of the locking bolt and reduces friction during rotation, which helps to extend the lifespan of the lock's internal mechanism. These keys are intended for use as duplicates or replacements when the original set is insufficient or has been lost.

  • Application: Primarily used for front door nightlatches and secondary rim locking systems.
  • Compatibility: Designed for use with all standard Yale-branded rim cylinders.
  • Function: Operates the cylinder from the external side of the door to retract the latch or engage the deadbolt.

When providing additional keys for a security system, using precision-cut blanks is vital to maintain the security integrity of the door. These keys provide a functional and cost-effective alternative to replacing the entire cylinder unit when additional access points are required for a property.

The Yale Reversed Long Strike is a technical component designed to facilitate the secure operation of reverse bolt nightlatches. Specifically engineered for outward opening doors, this strike plate provides the necessary clearance and housing for the bolt to engage correctly when the door is in the closed position.

The extended lip profile is a key functional feature, protecting the timber door frame from repeated latch contact and preventing splintering or wear. It is typically used in residential or commercial settings where traditional inward opening doors are not feasible, ensuring that the security properties of the nightlatch are maintained. This part is suitable for both initial installations and as a direct replacement for worn or damaged strike plates within an existing Yale lock system.

  • Specifically for outward opening door configurations
  • Protects frame surfaces from latch impact
  • Ensures correct alignment for reverse bolt nightlatches
  • Durable construction for frequent use

The Yale Reversed Angled Strike is a specialist component designed specifically for doors that open outwards. Standard nightlatch installations typically require a box or flat strike; however, when a door opens away from the internal face, a reverse bolt nightlatch must be used in conjunction with an angled strike plate like this one.

The angled design allows the latch bolt to engage securely with the frame while compensating for the door's direction of travel. This ensures that the locking mechanism operates smoothly and maintains the integrity of the door's security. It is an essential part for timber door frames where a standard strike plate would not be functional due to the door orientation.

  • Suitable for timber door frames
  • Functions with Yale and other standard reverse bolt nightlatches
  • Assists in maintaining correct alignment between the lock and frame
  • Durable construction for long-term reliability

This Black & Decker Drill Bit Set is specifically curated for the installation of nightlatches on wooden doors. It provides the essential boring tools required to prepare a door for standard cylinder rim locks, ensuring a clean and accurate fit.

The kit comprises a flat spade bit and a smaller twist drill bit. The spade bit is used to create the large diameter hole necessary for the lock cylinder to pass through the door leaf. Its central point allows for precise alignment with marked measurements, while the outer spurs cut the wood fibres cleanly to prevent breakout on the reverse side of the door.

The accompanying twist drill is used for drilling pilot holes for the mounting screws and the internal cylinder tailpiece. This prevents the timber from splitting during the final assembly of the lock hardware. Both components are manufactured from hardened steel to maintain sharpness across multiple installations in various timber densities.

  • Compatible with standard power drills and impact drivers
  • Suitable for new door installations and replacement upgrades
  • Ideal for use with most standard UK rim cylinder nightlatches
