The Yale 88 Nightlatch is a traditional surface-mounted rim lock designed for use on timber doors. It provides a convenient slam-to-lock action, making it an ideal choice for main entrance doors or internal rooms requiring controlled access.

This 60mm backset nightlatch features a versatile internal snib mechanism. This allows the user to either deadlock the bolt from the inside, preventing the key from being used externally, or to hold the bolt in the retracted position to allow free passage without the door locking. This makes it highly functional for various domestic and commercial environments.

Typically used as a secondary security measure, the Yale 88 is best paired with a BS3621 mortice deadlock on external doors to meet insurance requirements. It is suitable for both left and right-handed doors and can be adapted for outward-opening applications with the addition of a reverse bolt striking plate. Whether used for a new installation or as a direct replacement for an existing unit, this nightlatch offers a time-tested solution for door security.

No unfortunately not, the BS3621 nightlatches can not be reversed. The only way to do this is to install a standard nightlatch from our outward opening nightlatch section and then also install a BS3621 deadlock. This deadlock will give you the insurance rating required.

You need to make sure the lock you fit is NON deadlocking. This means that you can not lock people into the property. There are a few nightlatches designed for these doors. The best is the Yale PBS3 or PBS4 or a more standard model would be the Yale 88 or 84.

The best locks for these would be the a rollerbolt style lock with a masterkeyed cylinder. I would not recommend installing a standard Nightlatch on these doors as the tenants can lock themselves out if they close the door behind them. We can supply these locks for you on a masterkey if you require or keyed differ if you would prefer.

The backset on these locks is the distance from the edge of the door to the center of the Rim Cylinder. This is the large 32mm hole drilled through the door. There are 2 main sizes of these, 60mm or 40mm. Easiest way to find out what you have is to measure from outside of the door from the edge to the center of the keyhole. If you have a solid door you should use the 60mm backset locks, if you have a glass panelled door then you may need to use the 40mm backset. If your current lock is 50mm backset you will need to see our Union locks as only Union made a 50mm backset lock in the past.

There are different levels of security you can have with all locks. The standard locks (i.e. Yale 77, Yale 88) , then the mid level locks which can be key deadlocked from outside ( Yale 89, Union nightlatches). The double locking versions are only suitable for homes with other means of exit as you can lock people inside the house if not careful.

All the extra keys for the locks are cut to the specific locks that have been ordered.

With most locks that are altered to make them keyed alike you will only get 1 x set of keys with them. So if the locks normally come with 2 you will only get 2 keys total and if they come with 3 keys you will only get 3 x keys total when ordered keyed alike.

The Yale 88 features an internal slide button (snib) that provides two main functions. You can use it to hold the latch bolt back in the retracted position for free entry, or you can use it to deadlock the bolt. When deadlocked, the lock cannot be opened from the outside with a key or from the inside via the handle, offering enhanced security when you are home.

While this nightlatch is suitable for external doors, it is best practice to use it in conjunction with a BS3621 mortice deadlock for primary entrance points. This combination provides a secondary locking point and ensures your door meets standard home insurance security requirements.

Yes, this lock can be adapted for outward-opening doors. For this application, the bolt must be reversed, and a specific long-lipped striking plate (available separately) is required to ensure the latch correctly engages with the frame.
