The Yale 89 Deadlocking Night Latch is a surface-mounted rim lock designed specifically for inward opening timber doors. This model features a deadlocking mechanism that can be activated from the outside by turning the key a full rotation in the opposite direction of opening. Once deadlocked, the internal lever handle is rendered inoperable, providing an additional layer of security against forced entry.

This 60mm backset version is a standard specification for residential doors, positioning the cylinder at a functional distance from the door edge to prevent interference with the frame. The unit includes a snib button on the internal face, which serves a dual purpose: it can hold the bolt in the retracted position for convenience or lock the bolt in the extended position to prevent entry even with a valid key.

Typical applications include front or back domestic doors where it serves as a reliable secondary lock. For insurance compliance on external doors, it is recommended to use this night latch in conjunction with a British Standard BS3621 mortice deadlock. No unfortunately not, the BS3621 nightlatches can not be reversed. The only way to do this is to install a standard nightlatch from our outward opening nightlatch section and then also install a BS3621 deadlock. This deadlock will give you the insurance rating required.

You need to make sure the lock you fit is NON deadlocking. This means that you can not lock people into the property. There are a few nightlatches designed for these doors. The best is the Yale PBS3 or PBS4 or a more standard model would be the Yale 88 or 84.

The best locks for these would be the a rollerbolt style lock with a masterkeyed cylinder. I would not recommend installing a standard Nightlatch on these doors as the tenants can lock themselves out if they close the door behind them. We can supply these locks for you on a masterkey if you require or keyed differ if you would prefer.

The backset on these locks is the distance from the edge of the door to the center of the Rim Cylinder. This is the large 32mm hole drilled through the door. There are 2 main sizes of these, 60mm or 40mm. Easiest way to find out what you have is to measure from outside of the door from the edge to the center of the keyhole. If you have a solid door you should use the 60mm backset locks, if you have a glass panelled door then you may need to use the 40mm backset. If your current lock is 50mm backset you will need to see our Union locks as only Union made a 50mm backset lock in the past.

There are different levels of security you can have with all locks. The standard locks (i.e. Yale 77, Yale 88) , then the mid level locks which can be key deadlocked from outside ( Yale 89, Union nightlatches). The double locking versions are only suitable for homes with other means of exit as you can lock people inside the house if not careful.

All the extra keys for the locks are cut to the specific locks that have been ordered.

With most locks that are altered to make them keyed alike you will only get 1 x set of keys with them. So if the locks normally come with 2 you will only get 2 keys total and if they come with 3 keys you will only get 3 x keys total when ordered keyed alike.

The 60mm backset features a longer body that positions the latch handle and cylinder further from the door frame. This provides easier access and prevents you from catching your knuckles against the frame when opening the door. Additionally, it allows for a longer bolt throw, ensuring the door is locked more firmly.

The inside handle can be deadlocked by performing a reverse turn of the key in the outside cylinder after you have closed the door. This renders the internal handle inoperable, providing an additional layer of security by preventing the door from being opened from the inside without a key.

This specific model is designed for standard inward-opening doors. If your door opens outwards, you will require the reversed version of the Yale 89 Deadlocking Night Latch to ensure the latch bolt and strike plate align and function correctly for that specific door orientation.

Yes, the slide button on the lock body serves two functions:

  • It can hold the bolt back in the open position to allow for free entry and exit.
  • It can deadlock the bolt, rendering the lock inoperable by both the outside key and the inside handle for maximum privacy and security.
